Progress in Medical Transport by Drone in Varese
On July 3rd, a successful test flight was carried out as part of the EU-funded U-ELCOME DSD Project , with a drone simulating the transport of medical supplies from hashtag#Milan Malpensa’s Cargo City to Varese’s Hospital del Circolo and back.
This milestone, achieved through the collaboration of SEA Milan Airports, City of Varese, and ASST Sette Laghi, aims to improve delivery times, reduce CO₂ emissions, and enhance sustainability in the healthcare sector.
Using long-range electric drones designed for urban operations, the project demonstrates how advanced air mobility can support faster, greener, and safer logistics.
The initiative is coordinated by EUROCONTROL within the SESAR Joint Undertaking, with SEA leading the Milan Sandbox—a safe testing environment for innovative drone services.
A promising step toward integrating drone-based transport into future healthcare logistics.
SEA collaborates with several Italian partners, including ENAV, D-Flight, Unifly Consulting | formerly EuroUSC Italia, Telespazio, Techno Sky, and Dronus in the planning and development of flight campaigns, as well as with ENAC – Ente Nazionale per l’Aviazione Civile on regulatory and authorization matters.
