U-ELCOME TO REALITY: FROM RESEARCH TO IMPLEMENTATION
A workshop dedicated to exploring the early stages of U-space services implementation.
- 9-10 April 2024
- Castelldefels School of Telecommunications and Aerospace Engineering, Castelldefels, Barcelona, Spain
The U-ELCOME project is hosting its second workshop with the goal of fostering collaboration and providing a platform for discussions on key topics and challenges arising in the early stages of the implementation of U-space technologies. It offers a collaborative space for current and future implementors to involve in valuable conversations, sharing experiences and addressing concerns about U-space and its digital services. The workshop will feature dedicated sessions covering various technical and related topics, providing participants the opportunity to discuss and provide their vision about crucial topics in the early stages of U-space implementation. The outputs will be key contributions for the handbook U-ELCOME project is producing where all these lessons learnt, best practices and recommendations will be collected to help current and future users in the implementation of U-space. This handbook called “U1 and U2 implementation best practices handbook” will be one of the main outputs of U-ELCOME project and it will be key for the harmonization in Europe.
AGENDA (UPDATED 28 MARCH 2024)
The workshop will consist of several discussion sessions. These sessions will run simultaneously and will be repeated, giving attendees the chance to participate in different topics.

WHAT IS U-SPACE?
U-space is a set of specific services and procedures designed to ensure safe and efficient access to airspace for a large number of drones, and which are based on high levels of digitalisation and automation.
FOSTERING U-SPACE IMPLEMENTATION
The U-ELCOME project is hosting its second workshop with the goal of fostering collaboration and providing a platform for discussions on gaps and key topics essential for the successful implementation of U-space technologies. This workshop offers a collaborative space for current and future implementors to engage in valuable conversations, sharing experiences and addressing concerns related to the present and future of U-space. The workshop will feature dedicated sessions covering various technical and non-technical topics, providing participants with a comprehensive understanding. Additionally, information tables will be available, offering an opportunity to gather detailed insights and resources.
WHAT IS U-ELCOME?
U-ELCOME is a three-year SESAR Digital Sky Demonstrator project, involving 51 partners, whose overall aim is to support the implementation of services for the safe and secure integration of drones. With demonstrations taking place in three European countries, the project aims to support the interoperability and harmonisation of services within the framework of U-space. The Demonstrator is co-funded by the Connecting Europe Facility.
One of the main objectives of U-ELCOME is working for the harmonization inside and outside the project in the implementation of U-space. Through collaborative efforts with EASA and various national and international authorities, U-ELCOME aims to play a pivotal role in consolidating standardization and regulatory requirements necessary to implement U-space.
HANDBOOK AS A HARMONIZING TOOL
For a successful implementation of U-space, it is essential that all the stakeholders involved work together sharing information and experiences. Through this workshop and other means, U-ELCOME aims to gather experiences gained inside and outside the project that will be collected in a document called “U1 and U2 Implementation Best Practices Handbook”.
This handbook will contain recommendations, lessons learnt, best practices and conclusions about the process of implementing U1 and U2 services to help future implementors based on the findings of the contributors. To collect these valuable inputs, different collaboration and information exchange mechanisms are used, including the workshop that will be held next April.
